Finding Joy in Winter Photography
During the winter on Cape Cod, we have a lot of gray and overcast days. It can be difficult to find “good light” for photographing. Lucky for me, one of the reasons I love landscape photography, is because it gets me outside and interacting with nature:) So, “good light” or not, I always enjoy the experience!
One of the ways I stay inspired to photograph during the winter, is to invite friends along. We’re able to chat and have a visit, while hiking about and while I’m looking for a composition. I’m fortunate to have very accommodating friends. They’re used to me lugging camera equipment around.
Another way I stay interested with winter photography, is by photographing in different locations…Places I’m not usually able to go in the summer due to the high tourist population (I mean, I COULD go, but it’d mean sitting for HOURS in traffic:) For instance, if we have a forecast for gale force winds, I might drive to a location I think will have larger waves than the beaches nearby. My wave photography is something I really want to work on. I find it so exciting to watch the waves crashing to shore.
I’ve learned the hard way that preparing ahead of time and having all the necessary clothing layers, adds to the enjoyment of the photo session. I always have a hat and a pair of gloves with me. I don’t always bring my boots, but I should!! I’ve ruined a few pairs of sneakers, because I get lured into the water sometimes, when I’m trying to capture the photo.
I also love chasing sunsets in the winter! I appreciate them even more in the winter, because it gives me a chance to photography some beautiful color.
