Exploring the Similarities Between Landscape and Brand Photography

I’ll always LOVE getting outside and photographing nature. It’s healing for me, BUT, I’ve also fallen in love with brand photography!

You may be thinking, huh??? Those two genres of photography aren’t alike at all! But, surprisingly, there ARE some similarities.

When I’m photographing outside, usually at the beach, I’m trying to capture the coastal beauty that surrounds me here on Cape Cod.

I try to compose the photo in a way that shares what I’m feeling at that particular moment in time. For instance, it could be drama with lots of crashing waves, or tranquility with calm, smooth water and pastel colors. I’m hoping the viewer will feel something when they view the photograph.

With brand photography, I use brand strategy to determine which photos to take. The photographs are intentional. They need to have some meaning for the clients audience. I want the photographs to help create a connection between the business/brand and its ideal clients/customers. I want the audience to feel like they know the business owner and what they stand for.

With each type of photography, I’m trying to capture the attention of the viewer and have them feel something.

Planning Is involved before each photoshoot. For landscape photography, I need to plan the best time for good lighting, and check the wind and weather forecast, as well as the tide chart. For personal brand photography, I need to learn about the brand…their ideal clients, their mission and goals.

Both landscape and brand photography can evoke emotions, convey a message and establish some type of connection. (One is to the environment and the other is to the brand.). They both are seeking to capture the heart and soul of the viewer.

If I combine the two (taking brand photos in a natural setting), it helps the brand to be seen as more authentic, genuine and caring of the environment…this is perfect for eco-friendly businesses.

The goal of BOTH landscape and brand photography, is to have the viewer FEEL something and ignite their imagination:)
